Nylon Folding Chairs Have Many Uses

Nylon folding chair is a general term that refers to a class of chairs made for the outdoor market. People use nylon folding chairs for sporting events, outdoor concerts, picnics, fishing at the lake, camping and spending time in your own back yard. Nylon folding chairs are also known as bag chairs due to the nylon carry bag with strap that even the smallest youth chairs come with now. That carry bag used to be more trouble than it was worth as the Chinese manufacturers would spec the chair out to get the lowest possible price so they would cut the dimensions down on the bag until it was nest to impossible to return the chair to the carry bag. Consumers complained enough to stores that the buyers finally told the factories to be a little more generous in the carry bag dimensions so that anyone could get the chairs back in.

About ten years ago a company called Macabee was making nylon folding chairs for several major sporting goods chains and another Chinese maker came into the market and there was a price war. The first nylon folding chairs had no arms. Arms were the first upgrade. Then came the addition of cup holders. Fabrics were upgraded and made thicker; sometimes seats and backs were padded. Other features like removable padded headrests and magazine pockets were added. Seats were made wider and rockers were added. Bench style seating with three and six person nylon folding chairs were made.

During the price wars Macabee was determined not to lose and has emerged as one of the dominant players in the nylon folding chair market. Now they are known as Mac Sports and they make a great deal of private label outdoor furniture for sporting goods and general merchandise stores like Target, Wal-Mart, Dick's Sporting Goods and others. On of the results of the price wars in the early 2000s was that you could get two nylon folding chairs with cup holders for $9.99. Retailers made a fortune even though the margins were low and the chair manufacturers did not make any money, but the promotion generated great traffic for retailers. One of my accounts, Galyan's, went though twenty five containers
 of chairs (4000 units per container) that summer. The nylon folding chair has become a part of the American lifestyle. No matter where you go you will see someone carrying a colored bag over their shoulder with their favorite chair in it.

Downsizing can be easier when you use custom furnishings

One of the biggest fears held by those who have downsized is that they will no longer be able to entertain people in their home comfortably. While there are real challenges to be sure, there are also dozens of creative ways to overcome the hindrances of tight space so that you can still enjoy the companionship of friends and family.

Think back to college days, beginning with dorm rooms and how what the room looked like was barely noticed. As we grow more mature, it is true that many of us develop an entire system of very demanding style requirements and expectations about how our living space should look. Some people believe that the character and quality of their home is directly linked to how the world perceives their success. This is why size is such a big stumbling block for a lot of property owners who want the world to view them as accomplished.

But here we are, smack in the middle of titanic economic shifts that have crushed traditional measuring standards, and one of the first things to shrink after one's bank account may be the size of your home. I feel dedicated to giving readers encouragement and reassurance that even though one's home may become smaller, you will be able to solve the new concerns caused by limited space.

Flexibility is the first item on a checklist designed to assist. Toss out any preconceived ideas about matching the pieces in your living room or other public rooms. Nowhere is it written that you must have a sofa and a loveseat. Settle on what type of comfortable seating you want for your everyday lifestyle. After that has been decided then look for mid-sized armchairs that are light enough so that you can move them around at will. Also, look for ways to disguise auxiliary seating for when you do entertain.

Instead of selecting the typical sofa-back-style table behind the sofa, this homeowner instead commissioned a handmade custom bench. At once, the woven leather bench becomes a sculptural piece of art on a day-to-day basis, and when guests arrive, it can be drawn up in front of the fire for extra seating.

One of the positive aspects of a small room is that you require so few items that you can often afford to spend a little more on truly unique and beautiful furnishings. Another option is to use individual ottomans that, when pushed together, form one large surface for a cocktail table. For instance, Palecek offers the Hudson Upholstered Ottoman that is comprised of four wedges that form one circular leather ottoman about 40 inches in diameter. Carlyle Custom Convertibles also offers two half-round Chameleon ottomans that may be used as a cocktail table or secondary seating.

You might investigate any number of attractive folding chairs that are a far cry from a metal folding chair you would find in a church hall. Ballard Designs has several designs from which to choose, but my personal favorite is the tortoiseshell bamboo folding chair. I own six and use them on Thanksgiving and Christmas to stretch my seating capacity.

Of course, you can find slightly less expensive options at places like Cost Plus, IKEA and Pottery Barn. Another option if you have ample storage space in a basement of the garage is stacking chairs. These can be a bit more comfortable because they often come in upholstered designs. Track stacking chairs down through restaurant suppliers and office furniture dealers.

In order to fit more guests at your table, consider using a temporary top simply made from a sheet of plywood. Realize that the surface of the plywood is rough so use a lining such as an extra blanket to pad the feel of the table. Once you cover the blanket over with your tablecloth, no one is the wiser. Trust me that when you set a lovely table with fresh flowers and candles, no one will be concerned with the table itself.

Baby chair recall over collapse risk

IKEA has been forced to recall a brand of baby’s high chair after it emerged they are at risk of collapsing while the child is in them.


The Swedish furniture giant said it wants customers who have a Leopard children’s high chair to stop using it immediately and bring the seat and frame back to the exchange and returns department at any IKEA store to receive a refund.

"Snap locks that secure the seat to the frame can break, making it possible for the seat to drop through the frame," a spokesman said.

"Children can suffer injury to the head and other parts of the body from falls. Detached snap locks pose a choking hazard to children."

IKEA said it had received 11 reports of broken snap locks, including one incident where the seat dropped through the frame leaving the child with bruised legs.

In a second incident a detached snap lock was found in a child’s mouth but was removed before the infant could choke on it.

Earlier this year, MacLaren announced that a million folding pushchairs in the US were being recalled after reports that 12 children lost their fingertips when they were caught in hinges. The company was criticised for not ordering a recall in Ireland where the products were on sale.

Those who don’t have adequate seating typically resort to the humble folding chair, known for being wobbly, uncomfortable and an eyesore. When the big day is over, they stash it away in the basement or a closet until the next gathering.

But shouldn’t the seating be as carefully considered as the meal?

According to Palo Samko, 34, a woodworker born in Czechoslovakia and now based in Brooklyn, it’s not hard to find well-designed folding chairs at a variety of prices if you know where to look.

Mr. Samko’s own furniture and accessories are sturdy and playful. His dining tables, for instance, often have hidden drawers that hold miniature art pieces, like a menagerie of animals carved out of wood.

But while he is passionate about inventive design, he said he never places form above function. “You can design crazy things,” he said, but if the furniture doesn’t feel good, “you can’t really use the piece.”

To find folding chairs that are functional and stylish, Mr. Samko went shopping in Manhattan and online, stopping first at Ralph Pucci in Chelsea. There, he admired six steel-frame folding campaign chairs by Jim Zivic, with seats and backs of various materials, including tanned leather, suede and shearling.

“This is a really special piece,” he said, sitting on one made with white suede. It could be used every day, he added, “in a cabin or in a really nice apartment.” (He wasn’t surprised to learn that all six chairs on display had been sold to a woman on Central Park West who planned to use them as her regular dining chairs.)

Around the corner at Bed Bath & Beyond, he lowered his 160-pound frame into a nondescript $14.99 wood chair. “I think even a kid could open it,” he said, noting its light weight. But he preferred another chair he found there, with a metal frame and a microfiber seat, because he thought it seemed more durable.

At Design Within Reach in the Flatiron district, he tried out the Lina, a “comfy” Italian steel-framed piece with a “really soft” leather seat and back, which he thought would develop a nice patina over time. He was particularly impressed by how easily it opened and shut — and the way it collapsed to a mere 3 1/2 inches wide.

His favorite find, though, were the vintage blue French school chairs at ABC Carpet & Home. “These are beautiful,” he exclaimed, running his hands over the chipped paint. The seat backs were comfortable, too, Mr. Samko said, even though they were made of a single strip of curved steel.

Newer pieces can be purchased “almost any time you want,” he said, but when vintage chairs sell out, “that’s it.”
